The Sept. 3 event will bring together clinicians, researchers, first responders and advocates to examine 25 years of 9/11-related healthcare and research

NEW YORK — Mount Sinai Health System will host a daylong conference examining what researchers and clinicians have learned about the lasting health effects of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the role of the World Trade Center Health Program in caring for responders and survivors.

The Sept. 3 event, “9/11 at 25: Honoring the Past, Protecting the Future,” will be livestreamed from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where clinicians, researchers, 9/11 responders and survivors, advocates and former elected officials will address both the health consequences that have emerged over the past 25 years and the systems developed to monitor and treat those affected.

A morning panel, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET, will address the physical and mental health effects associated with exposures at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, crash site. Panelists will also discuss medical monitoring and treatment through the WTC Health Program, along with challenges facing the program in the years ahead.

Participants include Dr. David Prezant, FDNY chief medical officer and special adviser to the fire commissioner for health policy, as well as Sean Michael, an FDNY 9/11 responder and co-chair of the WTC Health Program Responder Steering Committee. Medical directors from WTC Health Program clinical centers at Mount Sinai, New York University, Stony Brook, Northwell Health, Rutgers University and other institutions are also scheduled to participate.

The federally administered WTC Health Program provides medical monitoring and treatment for eligible 9/11 responders and survivors. It was established under the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010.

A second panel, from 2 to 4 p.m. ET, will focus on the years-long effort to secure federal healthcare and compensation for those affected by the attacks and their aftermath. Speakers include former U.S. Reps. Peter King and Carolyn Maloney, Uniformed Fire Officers Association President Jim Brosi, 9/11 Health Watch Executive Director Benjamin Chevat and FealGood Foundation founder John Feal.

Opening speakers include Rear Adm. Lisa Delaney, director of the WTC Health Program, and Allison Turkel, special master of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.
