An international research team has confirmed that pangolins living across Nepal and northern India belong to a distinct species, and the deciding evidence came from a museum drawer rather than a field survey. A team at the Natural History Museum in London sequenced DNA directly from the historical type specimen collected in 1836, a nearly 190-year-old animal, and the result matched modern Himalayan pangolin samples. The study, titled Revalidation of Manis aurita based on integrative genomic and morphological evidence, was published in Communications Biology and announced through the Field Museum's account of the pangolin study, whose mammal curator is a co-corresponding author.

The practical consequence is not the name. It is that laboratories now have a validated genetic reference for a species that customs officers have very likely been seizing without knowing it. Pangolins are the most heavily trafficked mammals in the world, and the material that turns up in a shipping container is usually scales, not animals.

We can't protect what we do not know, said Anderson Feijo, the Negaunee Assistant Curator of Mammals at the Field Museum and a co-corresponding author, who added that confirming the species is what makes protecting it possible. Narayan Prasad Koju of Nepal Engineering College at Pokhara University, the study's first author, said the confirmation caps more than five years of research that began in Nepal and provides a scientific basis for conservation planning and wildlife forensics.

Priority Rules Settled a Two-Name Problem

The taxonomy had been unsettled for barely a year, which is unusually fast for a mammal. In 2025, a separate team determined that animals long grouped as Chinese pangolins actually represented two species, and named the mountain-dwelling form found across Nepal, India, Bhutan and Myanmar as Manis indoburmanica, the Indo-Burmese pangolin.

Scientific naming follows a rule of priority: when the same species has carried more than one name, the earliest valid name wins. While that 2025 paper was in circulation, Feijo's group was already several years into a decade-long investigation of pangolin evolution and had worked through records of Manis aurita, described in 1836 and later demoted to a subspecies of the Chinese pangolin. The open question was whether aurita and indoburmanica were the same animal.

The 1836 specimen answered it. Kai He of the South China Biodiversity Research Center at Guangzhou University, another co-corresponding author, described the London sequencing as the decisive piece of the puzzle. Modern Himalayan samples matched aurita, which means Manis aurita is the correct name and the 2025 designation falls away. Yan Hua of the Guangdong Academy of Forestry, also a co-corresponding author, described the clarification as a basis for combating illegal poaching. The Himalayan pangolin differs from the Chinese pangolin in having a larger body, a longer tail, and smaller ears, and the name aurita itself refers to the ears. The two known ranges do not overlap.

Scales, Not Animals, Are What Customs Officers See

This is where the study stops being about nomenclature. Feijo has noted that marketplaces mostly yield scales rather than whole animals, which makes it hard to know which species are being hunted and where they come from.

A validated genetic reference changes what a seizure can tell investigators. Confiscated scales can be sequenced, assigned to a species, and then, because Manis aurita and the Chinese pangolin occupy separate ranges, narrowed to a region of origin. That converts a customs interception from a single enforcement event into information about where poaching pressure is concentrated, which is the kind of intelligence anti-trafficking units can act on.

U.S. institutions are embedded in this work. Contributing scientists came from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the University of Washington and the Field Museum, alongside Guangzhou University, Nepal Engineering College, Pokhara University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Sevilla, the Guangdong Academy of Forestry, Tribhuvan University and the Chinese Wildlife Forensic Science Service. CITES parties voted in 2016 to move all eight pangolin species to Appendix I, a listing that took effect in 2017 and prohibits commercial international trade. The United States is a destination market for pangolin products, so federal wildlife inspectors handle material that this reference data could help identify.

Species boundaries also matter for putting animals back. Reintroduction programs need to release the right species into the right range, and Feijo has pointed out that without knowing the difference, a program might have introduced Chinese pangolins into Nepal.

Recognition on Paper Is Not Protection in the Field

The limits here should be stated clearly rather than buried. Confirming a species does not confer legal protection on it. That depends on national listings, on a conservation assessment by the IUCN Red List, and on enforcement agencies having the budget, laboratory access, and trained staff to use genetic evidence at all. None of those follow automatically from a journal publication.

The evidence itself is strong for what it claims. This is an integrative taxonomic study combining genomic data from historical and modern specimens with morphological measurements, published in a peer-reviewed journal. What it does not do is estimate how many Manis aurita remain, map their current distribution in detail, or measure trafficking volumes for the species. Those are separate and harder questions.

There is also a split-species effect worth watching. When one population is divided into two, each resulting species has a smaller range and a smaller population than the original, which can mean a more severe conservation category for both. That is a plausible outcome of this work, not a finding of it.

Where the Next Decisions Get Made

Several bodies now have to act on the science. The IUCN Species Survival Commission would need to assess Manis aurita separately for a Red List category and population estimate. Range states including Nepal, India, Bhutan and Myanmar control domestic protected-species listings, and the CITES trade framework governs international trade and seizure reporting.

Museum collections deserve a note of their own, because they are the only reason this was possible. Feijo has explained that collections give researchers access to more individuals across a species' range, and that relying on fresh material alone would have sharply limited sampling for an animal that is rarely encountered in the wild. Specimens collected in the 1800s preserved genetic information from populations that would be difficult or impossible to sample today.

For U.S. readers, the takeaway is concrete rather than sentimental. Pangolin scales are a common seizure item at international ports, and the ability to say which species and which region a shipment came from is the difference between a fine and a case that reaches a supply chain. That capability now exists on paper. Whether it reaches the labs and inspectors who need it depends on funding decisions, not on further discovery.
