Probationary FDNY Firefighter Matthew Adams located the occupant despite heavy clutter that delayed crews’ search

NEW YORK — A fast-moving apartment fire Saturday morning left one resident seriously injured and a firefighter with minor injuries, according to the FDNY.

The blaze broke out at about 6:30 a.m. inside an apartment building at 2926 W. 25th St. in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy clutter that delayed their search of the apartment, the FDNY said.

According to the department, Probationary Firefighter Matthew Adams, assigned to Ladder 166, was able to make his way into the apartment, locate an occupant and carry the victim to safety.

The resident was transported to an area hospital in serious condition, according to the FDNY. One firefighter also suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The blaze escalated to an “all-hands” response, with 38 FDNY units and approximately 120 firefighters and EMS personnel responding to the scene. The fire was brought under control in about an hour, officials said.

Neighbors told News 12 the fire was a frightening scene but that they were thankful more people were not injured.

In a statement, the FDNY commended all responding members, including Adams, for their efforts in protecting life and property during the incident.

Following the fire, crews remained at the scene as water continued to pour from the building while firefighters worked to secure the property.

Fire marshals also began investigating the cause of the blaze, which remains under investigation.

Officials have not said what sparked the blaze.
