The co-founder of a beloved sandwich chain has died.

Chris Randall Sorensen, a former firefighter who took major risks to start Firehouse Subs with his brother Robin in 1994, was 65. The cause of death was not disclosed, but according to his obituary, he “passed away peacefully at his home with his family at his side” on Oct. 11.

Also known for his musical talent and philanthropy, Sorensen is remembered as the creative force behind the interior look and feel of Firehouse Subs, which has since grown from a single location in Jacksonville, Florida, to one of the largest in the US with more than 1,200 restaurants.

“Everything the guest saw when they entered Firehouse was a reflection of Chris’s spirit,” his obituary reads.

Firehouse, with favorites like Club on a Sub and Hook & Ladder, has reported more than $1 billion in annual system sales. The brothers sold the company to Burger King owner Restaurant Brands International in 2021.

“Throughout his time with Firehouse, Chris was always thankful for the time and treasure that his family members contributed to the success of the company, as well as the commitment and passion demonstrated by his partners and the employees and franchisees of the brand,” the obit continued.

Beyond the restaurant, Sorensen is remembered for his commitment to giving. The brothers established the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation in 2005 to provide life-saving equipment, tools, and education to the first responders they used to work alongside.

The foundation has awarded more than $118 million in grants to 7,700 departments in the U.S. and Canada.

As a firefighter and EMT, Sorensen worked with the Brevard County Fire Department, Jacksonville International Airport Fire and Rescue Department and then the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department for 10 years.

“Chris’s passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family and friends; one that can never truly be filled,” his obit concludes. “They find comfort, however, in knowing that he lived a full and meaningful life, rich in accomplishments and talents, and that his greatest legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren. His life, achievements, and the family he leaves behind are a lasting testament to a legacy that is truly remarkable and unforgettable.”
