For more than three decades, Cavender has answered calls across the Grand Strand to rescue animals and remove unwanted wildlife. This time, however, he was the one who needed help. “I’m just so happy she’s home,” Cavender said after reuniting with Mabel on July 22 near Tabor City, North Carolina. “I was crying. Mabel was crying. It was such a relief.”

He also thanked the thousands of people who shared his posts, checked in on his search, and never stopped asking whether there had been any news. Their support helped keep hope alive throughout the search and reminded him just how many people were rooting for Mabel’s safe return.

A Frightening Night Led to Weeks of Searching

The ordeal began on the Fourth of July when fireworks startled Mabel. The young Border Collie darted through an open door at the family’s home near the junction of South Carolina Highways 90 and 57 in Longs before disappearing.
