The magnitude 7.4 earthquake which struck Japan on Monday was both unusually brief and long duration. That may sound like a complete oxymoron, but there is a key factor that led to this being true. This is why the earthquake duration was officially only 12.1 seconds, yet some areas felt more than a minute of continuous ground motion such as in Tokyo.
