The dune field where NASA's Dragonfly rotorcraft is scheduled to touch down on Saturn's moon Titan now has an official name. The International Astronomical Union has approved Ahmakiq Undae for the roughly 500-mile-wide region of dunes and interdune terrain south of Selk Crater, NASA disclosed in a mission blog post on September 2.

The same update reported a separate hardware milestone. Engineers at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, installed the lander's electrical harness on its flight fuselage in July, a step that lets the rest of the spacecraft begin coming together.

Neither development changes the mission's schedule. Both are milestones in the assembly of a nuclear-powered rotorcraft designed to fly repeatedly across an alien moon, and the destination now carries a formal name that will appear in maps and scientific literature.

A Mayan Wind Spirit Lends Its Name to a Dune Field

The IAU is the global body responsible for approving names of features on planets and moons. Its convention for dune fields, designated undae in Latin, is to draw from gods and goddesses of wind, and the Dragonfly team selected Ahmakiq from a list of IAU suggestions.

In Mayan tradition, people appealed to Ahmakiq, pronounced ah-mahk-eek, to stop strong winds from damaging their crops. NASA gives the literal translation as one who locks up the wind. The USGS Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature, which maintains the official record for the IAU, lists the origin as a Mayan deity who locks up the crop-destroying winds.

The gazetteer gives the feature a diameter of 812 kilometers, about 505 miles, centered near 2.2 degrees latitude in Titan's equatorial dune belt. NASA rounds that to approximately 500 miles. The field borders the roughly 50-mile-wide Selk impact crater to the northeast and extends to the edge of a range of hills.

The name choice fits the destination in a way that is more than decorative. Titan's equatorial dunes are wind-built features composed of organic material, and understanding how they formed and how they move is part of what Dragonfly is going there to study on Titan.

Approval Came Months Before the Public Announcement

One detail is worth flagging for readers tracking mission milestones. The gazetteer records the approval date for Ahmakiq Undae as April 13 of this year, nearly five months before NASA announced it.

That gap is routine. The IAU approves names on its own schedule, and mission teams typically fold announcements into broader project updates. It's critical hardware that exists only to serve the rest of the lander, said Jackie Perry, the Dragonfly lander harness lead at the Applied Physics Laboratory, which designs, builds and will operate the rotorcraft for NASA.

By NASA's figures the flight-ready harness includes an estimated 17,315 feet of conductor wire and 374 connectors, and weighs about 100 pounds. The wire is silver-coated copper, insulated with a heat-resistant polymer, wrapped in aluminum and attached to plastic and metal connectors.

Titan's conditions shaped the design throughout the build, starting with heat. Because the rotorcraft uses a thermos bottle design, insulated to retain heat from its nuclear power source in Titan's extreme cold, the harness had to route under a layer of thick foam insulation on the outside of the lander while accommodating warm air circulating inside. High power demands required both 4 and 8 gauge wire, yet the bundle still had to weave through an interior packed with flight system and instrument boxes and a battery weighing nearly 300 pounds.

Dragonfly passed its critical design review in 2022. Harness fabrication began in late 2024 and finished about a year later. The team will keep connecting the harness to science instruments and other flight components as they arrive at the Maryland lab for integration and additional testing.

Selk Crater and the Reason for This Landing Zone

The dunes are the arrival point rather than the scientific prize. Deposits formed during the impact that created Selk Crater are the primary exploration targets.

NASA's reasoning rests on published analysis indicating that the impact melted Titan's icy bedrock and potentially created a large temporary pool that could have remained liquid for hundreds to thousands of years beneath an insulating ice layer, comparable to a winter pond on Earth. That would have put liquid water and complex organic material in contact, the combination researchers consider relevant to prebiotic chemistry.

The mission is designed to reach those deposits by flying rather than driving. After landing in the dunes, the rotorcraft would conduct a 3.3-year primary mission, hopping between sites and sampling organic dunes and impact-related terrain along the way.

The Road from Laurel to Titan

Dragonfly is scheduled to launch in summer 2028 and reach Titan in late 2034. That leaves roughly two years of assembly and testing at the Applied Physics Laboratory before launch, and a cruise of about six years after it.
