A M3.4 earthquake just struck the Netherlands, and surprisingly it led to hundreds of reports of damage. This quake, which occurred in the vicinity of Groningen is only the latest of more than 1,000 induced earthquakes that have collectively caused 1 to 2 billion euros in damage since 1990. What I am referring to are the Groningen (Natural) Gas Field earthquakes, which were indirectly induced by human activity. Today's video will discuss these earthquakes, and why they are likely to continue happening for several more decades. Note: This video's thumbnail image portrays a crack which appeared in a brick structure. While this image was not specifically taken in the Netherlands (and does not portray earthquake damage), it is being used as a stand-in to represent similar damage to what has occurred. A special thanks to the EarthquakeSim YouTube channel for granting me permission to use clips of his footage!
