Roof Collapse Forces Emergency Foster Call for 32 Dogs at New Jersey Shelter

A late night emergency at a New Jersey animal shelter has left dozens of dogs without safe kennels and urgently in need of temporary homes. On the evening of December 28, part of the roof at Associated Humane Societies Newark collapsed, forcing staff to relocate 32 dogs whose living spaces were suddenly deemed unsafe.

According to the shelter, the collapse happened around 10:30 p.m. when heavy snow from a neighboring building slid onto the shelter’s roof, causing it to cave in completely. The damaged section housed kennels for large breed dogs, making the situation especially urgent given the space and care those dogs require. Thankfully, no dogs or staff members were injured during the incident.

Olivia Gonzalez, social media manager for AHS Newark, said the focus immediately shifted to finding safe placements for the displaced dogs. Many were quickly moved into foster homes, but the shelter has continued to take in stray dogs, rapidly filling remaining kennels. As a result, the need for additional foster families remains critical.

A video showing the extent of the damage was shared on the shelter’s social media accounts and quickly gained traction online. Thousands of viewers expressed concern and offered support after seeing the collapsed roof and learning how many dogs were affected. The response brought much needed attention to the shelter’s situation, but it also underscored how vulnerable rescue operations can be when unexpected disasters strike.

Among the dogs still waiting for a foster home is Bruno, a two year old bully mix who arrived at the shelter as a lost dog. Staff describe him as playful and affectionate, and a video of him happily playing tug of war with a shelter worker quickly drew attention online. Despite the interest, Bruno has not yet been placed in a foster home.

Gonzalez explained that Bruno is currently recovering from a mild cold and would do best in a home where he is the only pet, reducing the risk of spreading illness. The shelter is hopeful that a family will step forward, not just for Bruno but for the other displaced dogs still waiting.

AHS Newark is asking for foster commitments of two to four weeks, giving the shelter time to complete repairs and safely reopen the damaged kennels. For those unable to foster, donations are also being accepted to help cover the cost of repairs. Staff say the community response so far has been overwhelming and deeply appreciated, offering a reminder that even in moments of crisis, compassion can bring hope.
