Cali had everything a dog lover could ever ask for — sweetness, loyalty, and endless love to give. But her journey through life hasn’t been easy. The beautiful Plott Hound mix from Louisville, Kentucky, has faced heartbreak twice, only to prove that her gentle spirit can never be broken.

When Cali first arrived at the Animal Care Society in Louisville, she was one of several siblings surrendered by her former owners. Despite her rough start, she radiated hope, and it didn’t take long before a family fell in love with her and decided to take her home. For a moment, it seemed like she’d finally found her forever family.

Unfortunately, after a few months, things took a turn. Cali began showing signs of jealousy toward her new dog siblings, and her adoptive family decided to bring her back to the shelter. Though heartbroken, Cali didn’t let her spirit fade. She wagged her tail again and trusted that better days were coming.

Her optimism seemed to pay off when another family came forward, eager to adopt her. Cali adjusted quickly and was thrilled to have another shot at happiness. Yet again, fate had other plans. Her new family faced changes in their work situation and returned her to the shelter. Once more, she found herself behind a kennel door, unsure why love kept slipping away.

Still, Cali remained hopeful. The staff at Animal Care Society adored her. They described her as housebroken, affectionate, and a quick learner who adored treats. To help her find a home, the team brought her to an adoption event. Cali sat patiently, tail wagging, as families came and went. But no one stopped for her.

When the event ended, all her dog friends had been chosen. Cali was left sitting quietly in her crate, her eyes full of confusion. Her heart, once again, was heavy with disappointment.

A family in Seattle dropped their dog, a black lab named Mitch, off at a local kennel one day, not expecting anything unusual to occur. But Mitch's stay at the kennel ended with an employee brutally kicking and punching him - to the point of death.

The shelter team captured a video of that heartbreaking moment and shared it online. Viewers around the world were moved to tears, leaving thousands of messages of encouragement for the sweet pup. Despite all the attention, Cali continued waiting at the shelter — longing for the day someone would walk through the door and choose her for good.

Then, the long-awaited update came. On May 22, 2025, the Animal Care Society announced that Cali had been placed in a foster-to-adopt home. “This means her new family fully intends to adopt her and give her the forever home she deserves,” the shelter wrote. The next few weeks would serve as a trial period, ensuring that Cali felt safe, comfortable, and finally at peace.

Cali’s journey is a beautiful reminder that love often takes time, but it always finds its way. After all she’s been through, this resilient girl is finally getting the second chance she’s waited for — a real home and a family that won’t ever let her go.
