Hunt County commissioners voted to discontinue coverage for unincorporated areas outside Quinlan, citing incidents including a March 2025 fire that killed three people

HUNT COUNTY, Texas — Fire protection services in parts of south Hunt County are set for change after county commissioners on Monday voted to discontinue their contract with the Quinlan Volunteer Fire Department.

The decision affects fire response in unincorporated areas outside the city of Quinlan, where the volunteer department has served under contract with the county. Coverage inside the city limits is provided separately by the South Hunt County Fire Department and is not affected by Monday’s vote.

Monday’s vote came after a series of incidents involving the Quinlan Volunteer Fire Department, including a March 2025 fire on North Shore Road near Quinlan that claimed three lives.

Family members of two of the victims – Brent Bedwell and Johnny Bedwell – had asked county commissioners to perform an investigation into the response of the Quinlan Volunteer Fire Department, saying both men could have been saved.

Commissioners also cited a 2025 crash involving a Quinlan Volunteer Fire Department fire truck that put the department’s readiness and training, in addition to vehicle maintenance.

Fire protection services will continue under the existing arrangement during the 90-day period while commissioners determine a long-term solution for county residents.
