Newhouse reported that he observed 12 to 14 reflective objects and recorded the event on a color motion-picture film using a handheld Bell & Howell Auto Master camera. Newhouse, a U.S. Navy Warrant Officer specializing in photography, as honest and reliable, and as an expert with more than 1,000 hours of aerial-photography experience. Newhouse reported observing 12 to 14 reflective objects and recorded the event on color motion-picture film using a handheld Bell & Howell Auto Master camera. The files show the "Project Blue Book" assessment of the imagery looked at several possible explanations — sunlight reflecting from birds or balloons, a mirage effect — but did not conclusively determine what the objects were, but later assessments "became more confident that the objects were seabirds reflecting sunlight, citing identifiable seabirds and similar films showing seabirds as bright points of light under comparable conditions." The file below includes imagery of pillow balloons supplied by General Mills Research Laboratories when, in late December 1952, Project Blue Book personnel, balloon specialists, and representatives from General Mills reviewed the Tremonton footage. The Pentagon file says the group’s consensus was that the objects closely resembled pillow balloons in flight and behaved consistently with that explanation. The report says one of the General Mills representatives was less convinced and noted that the objects appeared somewhat too bright and seemed to maneuver too rapidly.
