Woman Follows Paw Prints to Her Door and Discovers a Mystery Animal in Need

On a frigid morning in Pennsylvania, Christina Eyth noticed an unusual sight outside her home. Fresh paw prints trailed through the snow, leading directly to her front door, almost as if an animal had come seeking help. Curious and concerned, she decided to follow them — a decision that would lead to a surprising and unforgettable rescue.

“I saw that there were dog prints that went up to my door like he was looking in for help,” Christina later shared with The Dodo.

The trail led her to her basement door, where she found a frail and shivering creature curled in the snow. His fur was patchy and thin, his skin raw from mange, and his body shook with cold. His eyes, filled with desperation, pleaded silently for kindness.

Unsure what she was looking at, Christina hesitated only for a moment. Was this a dog? A wild animal? Something else entirely? His features were so obscured by illness that it was impossible to tell. But one thing was clear: he needed help. “I just saw an animal in need of help and wanted to help him,” she explained.

Christina coaxed the animal inside, giving him food, water, and a warm place to rest in her basement. Despite his fear, he showed no aggression. Hoping for answers, she shared photos of the mysterious visitor on her community board.

Her post quickly reached volunteers at Tj’s Rescue Hideaway, a Pennsylvania-based rescue group. Even they couldn’t determine exactly what he was, but they knew he needed immediate care. Organizer Maria and her team soon arrived, safely capturing him and transporting him to Wildlife Works–Mount Pleasant for treatment.

Veterinarians began addressing his severe mange and dehydration while sending out DNA tests to uncover his true identity. For weeks, speculation grew — was he a neglected stray dog, or something wild like a coyote or wolf?

But before the answer arrived, the story took a dramatic twist. The animal managed to escape from the wildlife facility, slipping back into the wilderness without a trace. Search efforts turned up nothing, leaving only questions about his fate.

Finally, DNA results provided the truth: Christina’s mystery rescue wasn’t a dog at all. He was a coyote.

Dogs Killed Following Domestic Dispute

The man's behavior shows the connection between animal abuse and other types of cruelty. He's already been jailed in the past for his violent history, but that obviously didn't address his underlying motivations for this kind of assault.

Though the revelation surprised everyone, Christina never regretted her decision to help. “No matter the results of the test, I wouldn’t have changed anything I did to help him,” she said.

Her compassion offered a wild creature a second chance and served as a powerful reminder: true kindness doesn’t depend on species. Sometimes, helping is simply about answering a call for need, wherever it comes from.
