A major magnitude 7.5 earthquake just struck off the southern tip of South America, within the Drake Passage. While this did generate a minor and undamaging tsunami, the earthquake was interesting for a reason unrelated to this or its size. Simply put, this was an abnormally large intraplate earthquake, which I will now elaborate upon via my analysis and opinion as a geologist.
