The Wilmington Police Department in Massachusetts is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Zena, its 3-year-old comfort dog, after a head-on collision in Tewksbury claimed her life. Zena, a Bernedoodle who joined the department in 2022 as a puppy, had become a trusted source of compassion and comfort for countless residents.

The crash happened Tuesday morning when another driver allegedly crossed the double yellow line and struck a Toyota Camry driven by Wilmington Police Department Clinician Samantha Cavanaugh, Zena’s handler. Cavanaugh was injured and taken to a local hospital, while Zena was rushed to an animal hospital under Nero’s Law, which allows for traumatically injured police dogs to be transported by ambulance. Despite swift action, Zena’s injuries proved fatal.
Zena’s role in Wilmington went far beyond being a therapy dog. Assigned to the department’s Health and Recovery Unit, she worked closely with Cavanaugh to support residents facing behavioral health struggles, substance use challenges, and developmental needs. She was also a regular presence in schools, senior centers, and community events, offering a calming influence wherever she went.
Police Chief Brian Pupa captured the depth of the loss in a statement: “We are heartbroken today because Zena was a beloved member of our Wilmington Police family, and a beloved member of our community. For three years, Zena put residents and families at ease even during the toughest of times, and her work will not be forgotten. She served her community well.”

Zena had become a recognizable figure in town, even maintaining her own Instagram account filled with moments of joy and connection. Her gentle personality and steady presence helped bridge gaps between the department and the community, creating bonds that words alone often could not.
The Tewksbury Police Department is continuing its investigation into the crash, while Wilmington residents mourn the loss of a dog who was more than just a pet—she was a true public servant. The outpouring of grief and gratitude reflects the profound impact Zena made in just three short years.

Though gone far too soon, her legacy will endure through the comfort she brought to so many and the example she set of how love and presence can change lives.
