Anak Krakatau is erupting powerfully in Indonesia's Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. One of its highest ash plumes rose to around 15 kilometers, or 50,000 feet. The ash cloud spread across Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Lampung, and parts of Sumatra. Volcanic ash has fallen in populated areas, covering roads, buildings, and vehicles. Residents have reported eye irritation and breathing discomfort, prompting authorities to recommend masks and eye protection. A three-kilometer exclusion zone has been established around the crater, while fishing activity has been suspended nearby. The eruption has caused major disruption to Indonesian aviation, with eight airports closed at its peak. By Monday, seven airports were still closed, while around 2,961 flights and 341,000 passengers had been affected. Powerful explosions have produced deafening booms reportedly heard up to 700 kilometers away, with residents also reporting vibrations and shaking windows. Meanwhile, witnesses have noticed large flocks of birds suddenly fleeing the area, which some locals view as an ominous warning. There is no scientific evidence that birds can predict eruptions, but Anak Krakatau remains under close monitoring as further ash, lava, and volcanic bombs are possible.
