Every 12 to 38 years, a strong earthquake of approximately magnitude 6.0 strikes the same small section of California. These earthquakes have caused damage, and are quite unique because they occur on a consistent cycle. This is the story of the so-called Parkfield Earthquakes, which have repeated time and time again, and are discussed in many geology 101 textbooks. A quick disclaimer. A magnitude 5.5 to 6.5 range earthquake is not guaranteed to occur within the region specified in today's video by 2042, it is just likely based on the historical rate of past events every 12 to 38 years (with the last such event in 2004).
