There are few things more powerful than seeing an animal get a second chance after hardship, and Hazel the pit bull is proof of that. In May 2020, Hazel was abandoned by her owners and taken in by Mr. Bones & Co. and Rescue the Runway in New York. At the time, she was eight to nine years old, emaciated, and suffering from diabetes that had left her blind. She had survived a life of backyard breeding and was battling diabetic ketoacidosis, which nearly cost her life.

Despite her struggles, Hazel’s gentle spirit quickly captured hearts. Since she had lived most of her life without sight, she learned to navigate the world through smell, touch, and sound. Rescuers knew she deserved better, and soon Hazel was placed in the care of her first foster parents, Elli and Sam. They researched how best to support a blind dog, creating a safe environment free of hazards and teaching Hazel cues to help her move confidently. Slowly, she began to wag her tail, play, and enjoy life again.

Her journey didn’t end there. That summer, Hazel went to live with her next foster parents, Allison and Pete. Alongside their care, Hazel was scheduled for a surgery that could change everything: cataract removal with artificial lens implantation. In October 2020, Hazel underwent the delicate operation. After days of rest and careful treatment, she experienced a moment she had never known before—sight.

When Allison and Pete picked her up after surgery, Hazel saw her beloved foster parents for the very first time. The emotional moment marked the beginning of her new life. Her recovery required weeks of eye drops and careful monitoring, but with patience, love, and plenty of treats, she adjusted beautifully.

Just a few months later, Hazel found her forever home with a family in Massachusetts, where she now lives happily with her new parents, Onalie and John, and her canine brother, Cooper. After years of neglect and hardship, Hazel is thriving. Her story shows the resilience of dogs and the incredible rewards of giving an overlooked animal a chance.
