Abandoned Dog Forced to Give Birth in Freezing Cold Rescued in Time

Imagine being left outside in the freezing cold while enduring the pain of giving birth. That was the cruel reality for a small chihuahua–terrier mix abandoned in Cambridgeshire, England. Dumped in a cage with no shelter or care, the mother dog was forced to deliver her first puppy alone. Tragically, the newborn did not survive, freezing to death within moments of being born.

Her cries of pain were eventually heard, and police were called. Joshua Flanagan of Fenland Animal Rescue rushed to the scene, where he found the desperate dog in visible agony. “She was in all this pain and discomfort, howling at the top of her lungs when we found her,” Flanagan told the BBC. Beside her lay the lifeless body of her firstborn. Rescuers immediately transported her to a veterinary clinic, where staff discovered she was still in labor.

Veterinarians quickly realized the dire situation: one puppy was lodged in her birth canal, and another was waiting to be delivered. The dog, later named Bella, required emergency surgery. Against the odds, the procedure was successful. Both remaining puppies were delivered alive and healthy, while Bella was finally given the chance to rest after her traumatic ordeal.

After surgery, Bella and her two surviving pups were moved to a shelter, where staff provided round-the-clock care. They were soon placed in a foster home, surrounded by warmth, food, and love—the very things they had been denied. Though Bella’s journey began with cruelty and neglect, her resilience and the compassion of rescuers turned her story into one of survival and hope.

Authorities believe Bella’s abandonment was intentional. Investigators suspect her owner left her to avoid the cost of veterinary care, even as she struggled to give birth in freezing conditions.

“The person who dumped her would have known exactly what was going on. They would have seen the dead puppy and heard Bella howling in agony,” Flanagan said. Many animal advocates argue that whoever abandoned her should never be allowed to own another pet again.
