A Queens man has been indicted on multiple charges in connection with a disturbing case of animal cruelty that left a community horrified. Prosecutors say 29-year-old Isaiah Gurley was responsible for the death of a pit bull service dog named Square K, who belonged to a family member.

According to the Queens District Attorney’s Office, the dog had been left in Gurley’s care in late July. Instead of providing protection and compassion, prosecutors allege Gurley subjected the service dog to shocking violence. Surveillance video from July 24 reportedly shows him dragging the motionless pit bull down a South Ozone Park street by its leash. Moments later, he is accused of dousing the dog’s body with an accelerant and setting it on fire.
A police officer discovered the charred remains, prompting an immediate investigation. Authorities later confirmed through a post-mortem examination that Square K had already died from blunt force trauma to the head before the body was set on fire. The ruling indicated the dog had been beaten prior to the burning.

“This dog suffered needlessly, and we have no tolerance for animal abuse in Queens County,” District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement. “As alleged, the defendant was supposed to be caring for a family member’s dog and instead subjected it to unfathomable cruelty as he killed the pit bull and then set it on fire.”
Gurley was arrested several days after the incident and now faces charges including aggravated animal cruelty, arson, and harming a service animal. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison. He is being represented by attorneys from The Legal Aid Society, which generally does not comment on active cases.
Authorities have not shared what may have led to the killing, nor have they disclosed further details about the family member who owned Square K. For now, the indictment ensures the case will move forward in Queens County Court, where prosecutors say they will pursue the maximum penalty available under the law.

The tragic death of Square K has sparked outrage across the community, with many calling for stronger protections for service animals and harsher consequences for abusers. For District Attorney Katz, the case stands as a grim reminder of the cruelty animals can endure and the importance of accountability when such acts occur.
